How to use
UK income tax bands (2025-26)
Personal allowance: £12,570 tax-free (frozen until 2028). Basic rate: 20% on income £12,571 – £50,270. Higher rate: 40% on £50,271 – £125,140. Additional rate: 45% above £125,140. The personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000 (fully gone at £125,140).
National Insurance (Class 1, employees)
Employee NI as of April 2025: 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above. This rate was reduced from 10% in April 2024 and from 12% before that. Self-employed people pay different NI (Class 2 and 4) — this calculator covers employees only.
Scotland's different rates
Scottish income tax has additional bands: 19% starter rate £12,571 – £14,876, 20% basic £14,877 – £26,561, 21% intermediate £26,562 – £43,662, 42% higher £43,663 – £75,000, 45% advanced £75,001 – £125,140, 48% top above. NI is the same UK-wide.
