UK vs US tipping
In the UK: 10–15% is standard for good service, 20% for excellent. Many bills include a discretionary service charge — check before adding extra. In the US: 15–20% is standard; 18–20% for sit-down restaurants. In most of Europe tipping is optional and smaller (5–10%).
💡 Did you know?
The word 'tip' has uncertain origins. One popular (but unverified) story claims it stands for 'To Insure Promptness' — money given before service to encourage attentiveness. Historians largely dismiss this as folk etymology.
