How to use

1

The Computus algorithm

Easter is calculated by the Computus (Latin: 'computation'): the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. The Western church uses the Gregorian calendar (reformed 1582); the Eastern Orthodox church uses the Julian calendar. The gap between the two varies between 0 and 5 weeks, though they sometimes coincide.

Easter in the UK

Good Friday and Easter Monday are UK Bank Holidays. The UK Government announced plans to fix Easter to the third Sunday in April (avoiding the early March occurrences and late April dates), but as of 2026 no legislation has passed. Easter remains 'moveable' between 22 March and 25 April.

💡 Did you know?

Easter is calculated by the Council of Nicaea formula (325 AD): the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox (21 March). This Computus algorithm produces dates ranging from 22 March to 25 April. Western churches (Catholic, Protestant) use the Gregorian calendar; Eastern Orthodox uses the Julian calendar, which diverges by 13 days in the 21st century.

🎯 From the desk

Easter's 'moveable feast' nature means it can fall on 35 different dates. This is why the school Easter holiday changes every year — UK schools typically have 2 weeks' break centred on Easter weekend.
