Frequently asked
Can I switch from prepayment to credit?
Usually yes — contact your supplier. Since 2023, Ofgem strengthened rules requiring suppliers to switch prepay customers to credit meters on request within 10 working days, unless there are safety or debt reasons preventing it.
Are prepayment meters being phased out?
Smart meters are replacing both traditional prepay and credit meters. SMETS2 smart meters can operate in either mode and be switched remotely by the supplier. Legacy 'key and card' prepay meters are gradually being replaced.
